Bays
Nathon Bay:
This is the island's capital and major settlement on the west coast of the Island where express and night ferries from the piers in SuratThani arrive and is the shopping centre for the locals of the island. A wide selection of souvenirs and handicrafts, silks and jewellery are readily available. It also provides visitors with all necessary facilities such as a post office, banks, police station, telephone services and the islands public hospital.
Thong Krud Bay:
Located to the South of the island next to Taling Ngam Beach, this bay is not far away from Ko Taen, a rich fishing ground for the local fisherman of Koh Samui. Though not suitable for swimming, the beach has daily boat services that go back and forth from Ko Taen.
Waterfalls
Hin Lat Falls:
Hin Lat waterfalls is located at the end of Route 4172, 3 km. south of the capital Na Thon. Surrounded by swaying palms, vibrant ferns and creeping plants, Hin Lat provides a few natural pools for bathing. To enjoy a more peaceful ambience, visitors need to walk for 2 km. to reach the top level so don’t forget to take a good pair of shoes.
Na Muang 1 Falls:
Na Muang 1 waterfalls are simply spectacular. About 11 km. to the south of Na Thon, cascading water flows from a steep cliff about 40 meters high and 20 meters wide. Its large pool below is verey inviting but visitors should take care as there are numerous boulders underwater. There is also Elephant back riding provided by nearby tour agents to make the journey even more enjoyable.
Na Muang 2 Falls:
Just 100 meters from Na Muang 1, these waterfalls are very similar to its sister in beauty and size but less frequented. as it is surrounded by thick forest and a bit of hiking is involved but the area is ideal for trekking and you can always go by elephant to make it easier.
Places of Interest
Wat Pradoem:
Built in the end of Ayutthaya era or about 250 years ago, Wat Pradoem is believed to be the first temple on Koh Samui. The temple boasts an ancient wooden hall for keeping ancient Buddhist scriptures which are beautifully decorated.
Wat Samret:
This very old temple features a large marble Buddha image brought from Burma and many other old Buddha images.
Wat Phra Yai or Temple of the Big Buddha:
Erected in 1972, this very popular temple boasts a 12-metre high golden Buddha which has become a spectacular landmark of Koh Samui. The temple is also a meditation centre and is definitely worth a visit.
Ban Lamai Cultural Hall:
Serving as a historical folk museum, it houses many objects used by local people in the past. Here you will find earthenware’s, household utensils, hunting weapons and equipment used in coconut planting.
